Our Moon's Mission Tallulah’s gift to genetic research

A stem cell harvesting medical procedure that will forge our genetic research ahead and help find a cure for SPG56

Yesterday our beautiful Tallulah Moon underwent a minor but vital medical procedure that could ultimately help find a cure or treatment for sufferers of SPG56.

Under general anaesthetic by Dr Pat See at Brisbane Private Hospital, ENT Surgeon Dr Chris Perry delicately harvested stem cells from the upper area of Tallulah’s nose- these are called olfactory stem cells.

With these cells, our research team will be able to grow vast numbers of these neurological stem cells to understand how the brain disease SPG56 behaves at a cellular level. They will then test drugs on those diseased cells with the hopes of finding “a hit”; a potential treatment or cure.

Chris, myself and all of Tallulah’s Army would like to sincerely thank the Brisbane Private Hospital, Dr Chris Perry, Dr Pat See and the Genetic Cures for Kids research team working on Our Moon’s Mission, our campaign to cure SPG56. These brilliant minds and Institutes came together and coordinated this procedure seamlessly, and at no cost to the foundation. We are deeply humbled by this generous gift of service that will inevitably shape the history of research into rare genetic diseases.

Today our brave, young Tallulah Moon is recovering at home and back to her usual tricks- horse riding/horse hugging and making her therapists smile with joy!
