Our Moon's Mission I fed my child’s replicated mini-brains so I can help find a cure for her genetic brain disease

Feeding your child is something every parent lovingly does.

Feeding your child’s induced pluripotent stem cells, so they can grow up to be brain organoids? Not so common!

Genetic Cures for Kids is so grateful to the dedicated researchers at the Australian Institute for Bioengineering & Nanotechnology – AIBN for their phenomenal progress to date, and for letting us get involved first hand on this mission- Our Moon’s Mission, to cure SPG56.

On this day, as we toured the AIBN to learn about research progress, I was able to feed Tallulah’s stem cells that are growing into mini brains. These mini brains were made from a tiny sample of blood. The blood was turned into induced pluripotent stem cells, and they are now being grown into brain organoids that will then be used for our team to test the gene therapy and drugs we are working to develop to treat SPG56.

This means we can safely test the therapies on SPG56 brains, without ever testing a thing on an SPG56 patient! The mini brains grown from Tallulah’s blood are identical in activity to Tallulah’s brain. Similarly, the labs have other SPG56 brains grown from the blood samples of other kids who have donated their sample for this miracle of science to come to life.

We are so grateful. With incredible scientists like this on our team, this moon shot is truly possible.
